Friends of the Viking Ship : Rediscovered

The Friends of the Viking Ship of Geneva, Illinois is a 501(c)3 non-profit heritage organization. It is located at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Dr, Geneva, IL 60134. The Friends was incorporated in 1971 as a not for profit organization to preserve, research and display artifacts from the long lost Viking ship Hjort Norseman that was found in Lake Geneva and subsequently disassembled at a salvage yard in Milwaukee. Since then, the organization has grown to include several museum sites throughout the town of Geneva and most importantly an active Youth Council with hundreds of members who are involved and enthusiastic about the preservation and research of the Hjort Norseman. The Friends’ mission is to promote educational programs concerning the Hjort Norseman by using modern technology to bring history to life; interpret her story; interpret her significance; educate visitors regarding our rich history; and inspire future generations to embrace their heritage.

The Viking Ship, or Hjort Norseman, was a one-masted, square-rigged sailing ship that was built in Norway for cargo and trade. More about this. The ship was built sometime between the mid-9th and early 10th centuries, and was discovered in Lake Geneva, Illinois in 1957 by two men who had gone looking for sunken logs. When found, the Viking ship had an estimated age of 1,000 years and was considered to be one of the best preserved Viking ships ever discovered. The ship was disassembled and taken to a salvage yard in Milwaukee to be dismantled. Unfortunately, due to the location of the wreck, the hull timbers had begun to rot, which caused the ship to be dismantled much faster than originally anticipated. In 1961 the Friends organization was founded to restore the Viking Ship and to find a permanent home for her.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Viking Ship Museum, we have a few different opportunities available. Associate: This is a part-time position that allows individuals to volunteer around 10 hours per week. Associate volunteers have the opportunity to help with events at the Viking Ship Museum, and are also encouraged to help with the regular museum hours. This is a great opportunity for those who want to help out with special events and parties, but do not want to be a member of the Friends of the Viking Ship. Board Member: This is a full-time position for those who are interested in helping to maintain the Viking Ship Museum and other projects that the Friends of the Viking Ship undertakes. Board members are required to attend two board meetings a year, and are also encouraged to help out with events at the Viking Ship Museum.

Today, the Viking Ship is a full-time museum housed in an 1884 Freight Depot building on the campus of the Geneva Historical Society. More about that here. The museum houses the Hjort Norseman and many artifacts from other historical sites in Geneva. Visitors can see the original ship timbers, a replica of the ship, a Viking feast hall, a Viking garden, and many artifacts from other local historical sites. A unique exhibit at the Viking Ship is the “Viking Feast Hall.” This exhibit brings the Viking experience to life by recreating a Viking feast hall. The hall is built to look like an actual Viking ship, and is furnished with Viking-style tables and benches. Visitors can sit down and try to imagine what it would have been like to have been a Viking in the 9th century.
