John B. Norris Recreation Center

The St. Charles Park District joined the St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 in December 2015 to manage the John B. Norris Recreation Center and its programs, memberships and services. In this agreement, the school district will continue to own the building. Therefore, the residency requirements for memberships and programs and daily activities are based on D303’s school boundaries. This agreement is a huge opportunity for the St. Charles Park District to expand its recreational services, such as indoor swimming, a fitness center, and indoor tennis courts.

The recreation center celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015. From 1985 to 2015, the operation was facilitated by a private, non-profit organization. Beforehand, the operation was contained by the St. Charles Park District between 1975 and 1985.

Lester J. Norris and Dellora A. Norris donated the 70 acres that St. Charles East High School stands today. Also, they made an initial contribution of $4.25 million towards construction and maintenance of the newly founded recreation center and cultural arts center. A little known fact is that the recreation center is named after one of the couple’s children.
