History of Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles
The Jack Kerr Memorial Riverwalk
In honor of John ‘Jack’ Kerr’s 25 years as a St. Charles Park District Commissioner, the Riverwalk is only walking distance away from downtown and shopping districts that are filled with historic sights like Hotel Baker.
A little about Jack…
Jack is the type of person who doesn’t just talk – he does. In his time on the board, more than 1,000 acres of land used for parks and open space were acquired as Jack was instrumental in winning National Gold Medal Award to improve facilities. He also advocated seizure or acquisition of existing properties to save them from development by private companies that would use these areas solely for profit making purposes – rather than enjoyment! This allowed him enough room during his tenure at Park District Board Meetings where they could discuss much without interference such as acquiring property with funds generated through its own enterprise activities like renting office spaces out?
After years of spearheading a campaign to renovate the rundown Swanson Pool in Pottawatomie, Jack was finally able to see his vision come true. After two successful referendums were passed which paved the way for conservation and development projects all over the county, there is now open space at Primrose Farm; major sports complexes have been developed such as Baxter Park Sports Complex (basketball) and Johnson County Aquatic Center-Waterworld Sportsplex (swimming); an aquatic park has also opened with a nature center adjacent to it; miles of bike paths are now available for both commuters and recreationists alike.
Jack always had one goal in mind: improving people’s lives through recreation and aquatics. It started with making sure there were no pools available because of the 70 year age limit on Swansons’ facilities; but when they opened their doors once more thanks to his hard work, Pottawatomie locals knew that this would not have been possible without him
